"In this simple concept book in the Growing Tree series, a companion to What is Round? (1999), the subject is all things square. Various ordinary objects appear in full-color photographs: a biscuit, a basket, a cold cube of ice, a window, a waffle, a sugar cube. Children will readily identify the familiar objects, such as crackers, quilt blocks, buckles, boxes, a brownie, and a book. It's a clean-cut collection, as a square button boldly asserts itself amid an assortment of round ones, and a round doorknob on a house provides enough contrast to keep the composition engaging. A final spread presents squares of all kinds—toys, mints, computer disks, a clock, a rubber stamp, a salt shaker—against a colorful painted background, enticing onlookers to point and identify. A cheerful, well-executed work."
