Behind the Book (continued)
Many references in the poems themselves allude to a mystery, a legend, a fact, but poetry often times nudges the reader to the side of metaphoric and lyrical language, suggesting he draw the curtains back and investigate behind stage; in other words, turn to the end notes to get the whole story. That's why they are there. Hopefully, they serve as the poem's partner in a book like this.

We tried to constantly be aware of voice as we wrote each one, hoping to make each fact come alive for the reader. We both had an amazingly good time writing this collection, and it is one we are both very proud of.

And of course we were thrilled beyond words when we first caught sight of Dan Burr's magnificent illustrations for the book that was to become, finally, Castles.
